Are Additional Regulations Needed for Facebook and Google?

When considering the last few years which have been filled with their fair share of vulnerabilities and privacy scandals (especially with Facebook), it seems additional regulation is needed in order to keep these larger companies from collecting user data unchecked. As there is very little transparency with regards to how these companies collect, store, and process our information, it is essential to take a collective look on how to improve the way users are informed of the services they are agreeing to.

Facebook and Google’s Biggest Issue

Both Facebook and Google utilize user data in order to perform above par in the advertising industry. However, while it could be said that such a tactic is good for tech companies, it can have a rather negative effect on the user, including the fact that instead of making the product more user-friendly and customized as it is advertised to the consumer, it instead helps to monetize the companies products.

Concerns About Tech Company Regulation

The focus of these regulations would be to limit the powers of companies like Google and Facebook, though it is important to keep in mind that small startups could also fall under these regulations and thus be affected by them. This is due to the fact that smaller companies that are just starting out might find themselves to be limited by the regulations, to the point that they would no longer be able to operate; whereas, Facebook and Google are larger-scale companies with massive budgets that enable them to change their practices to stay within the laws.
